The development of software and hardware system for monitoring and administration system (MAS) is based on the equipment of "MiniCom DX-500" series - one of the important areas of the company.

 

The developed software allows to focus the monitoring and management of geographically distributed systems of operational and technological communication on one or several operator workplaces. This provides a visual display of the current state and load of communication equipment for hundreds of kilometers.

 

During the development of the system an important trade-off between convenience and information capacity of operator interface is achieved. On the one hand, the operator has complete information about all the processes occurring in the system, relevant information about the real state of the communication system. On the other - it is not overloaded with information, the excess of which can significantly hamper the human perception of the overall picture of the system state. Suffice it to say that on the site, consisting of 31 stations, "MiniCom DX-500" tracks nearly 5,600 test points. It is clear that in the case of a simple "falling out" such a volume of information to the operator, it would be impossible to understand it all even for an expert, especially when you need to quickly make a decision on an abnormal or emergency situation.

 

A combination of convenience and functionality of the workplace achieved in the process of the development allows the operator to simultaneously control both the state of the communication system and the technical condition of the individual sites and stations up to a separate board and even its components using a hierarchic system of screen forms.

 

During the development it has been managed to combine the technological and operational views at the system of communication. The operator can see not only which specific users of the system can affect a conflict in the equipment, but also vice versa - to determine the technical devices, incorrect operation of which may cause complaints about the quality of communication on the part of a particular user. All this is made possible by the fact that the system provides a database that describes a communication system, not only in technological but also in administrative terms.

 

When creating an operator workstation, there is function of visual and audio notification of personnel on all emergencies in communication systems, logging and archiving of information on any changes to the technical condition of its components. They also provide a listing of all actions of an operator. Built-in tools of statistical analysis and visual display of the accumulated information allows identifying unstable operating system components and take measures to prevent failures before they can have a negative impact on providing users with reliable and uninterrupted communication. For this purpose, apart from the boundary conditions "defective / faulty" ("green / red") an intermediate state (conventionally referred to as "yellow") is provided for control objects, in which the object is serviceable and is involved in the maintenance of traffic, but its functionality does not operate correctly, which are appropriate to draw the attention of the operator. A typical example of such failures can be a CRC error for the first level E1 flow or retransmissions for the second level. The system provides a flexible adjustment of the thresholds for the transition of control objects between "yellow / green". Typically, they rely on the diagnostic messages frequency and may vary depending on the type of monitored object.

 

The system allows to constantly gain experience solving non-standard situations and to develop recommendations for staff to deal with such problems.

 

An important feature of the system is that the collection of diagnostic information and actions for the monitored objects do not require additional channel capacity. Transfer of diagnostic messages and terminal commands is performed via D-channel of one of the inter-exchange E1 flows.

 

The hardware of MAS system may vary widely. In case of monitoring of on site, which includes 30-35 "MiniCom DX-500" stations, all control can be focused on the operator workstation, which consists of a personal computer. When building a communication system consisting of several sites, including more than a hundred stations, it is necessary to establish a separate workstation for each site and a dedicated server for the organization of their interaction with each other. It is also necessary to install common display which displays total information for all workstations (usually this state of the communication system as a whole). When using the corporate data network (which is called "intranet") it can be organized more workstations with limited powers - without the right to issue control commands to the system, but displaying information about the current state of the communication system. These terminals can be located directly in manager’s workstation, who have no need to intervene directly in the process control of communication system, but it is important to have current information about its condition, and most importantly - the possibility of a statistical analysis of various aspects of its functioning.

 

MAS provides several levels of security. Access to the system involves authorization process of staff (username - password). The system administrator maintains a list of users with their appropriate level of authority - both in the composition of equipment available, and on the possibility of giving control commands: full access to the control system, limited access to manage the stations, just browsing. In addition to general access, access to specific equipment is also protected with password.

 

As has been already mentioned, logging of all events occurring in the system is provided - whether changes to the technical condition of the monitored facilities or actions of the operator. The log records the exact time, the content of the event, and for records of operator’s actions - the password. This ensures the possibility of further analysis and analysis of not only changes in the technical condition of the communication system, but also the adequacy of the staff.

 

The practical application of analytical centers of administration on the railways of the country has led to a significant increase in efficiency of departmental communications networks while reducing the cost of their operation.
